Nestled between I-240, I-40, and the Swannanoa River, East Asheville offers plenty of conveniences coupled with a quaint suburban lifestyle. Many grocery stores (including a Whole Foods), Asheville Mall, River Ridge Shopping Center, and the charmingly antiquated Innsbruck Mall can satisfy most shopping and dining needs, but downtown is just a quick 10-minute jaunt away. The area’s desirable neighborhoods include Oakley, Kenilworth, Haw Creek, and the prestigiously named Beverly Hills.
Primarily located in 28803, East Asheville features schools including Ira B. Jones, Claxton, Oakley, and Haw Creek Elementary Schools, Evergreen Community Charter, New City Christian, Asheville Catholic, Buncombe County Early College High, and Asheville High; more than half of which are ranked 7 or higher by Great Schools. Warren Wilson College is a private farm school with deep community roots located on the East edge of 28803 offering innovative degrees, music and art events, and an annual meat sale. East Asheville’s largest employer is the VA Hospital.
East Asheville is by all accounts a great place to grow up, and there is plenty for families to enjoy together. Enjoy indoor or outdoor GoCarts, Lazer Tag, Indoor Mini Golf, bumper cars, a climbing wall, 4D films, and a giant arcade, among other things, at The Fun Depot; visit native animals at the WNC Nature Center; take a hike on the Mountains to Sea Trail or browse the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which runs right through the middle of East Asheville; check out the Thomas Wolfe Cabin, go for a dip in a swimming hole, play soccer, walk the dog, have a picnic, or just hang out and play at Azalea Park; take in a movie at Carmike Cinemas; and top it all off with a yummy ice cream treat at Ultimate Ice Cream.
For the Grown-Ups
While East Asheville offers so much for families, grown-ups will find plenty to enjoy as well. Find Asheville’s Municipal Golf Course adjacent to Beverly Hills; enjoy a locally brewed beer and the occasional concert at Highland Brewing, or a locally crafted liquor next door at the Asheville Distilling Company; treat yourself to a pastry, craft cocktail, or dinner from Filo/Post 70’s ever-changing and endlessly creative menu; or for those more interested in a laid-back sports bar environment, pop over to East Village Grill next door for a great sandwich or something deep-fried. Copper Crown brings diners a fresh Italian, New Orleans, American cuisine adventure; and The Social is a friendly neighborhood joint for beer, bar food, and a game of pool.
